Can you guess which designer's creation Michelle Obama recently stepped out in?
The world had lots of questions for the Obamas this week on their historic visit to Cuba. How awkward would the president’s meeting with Raúl Castro be, for instance? (Considerably so.) But another pressing subject, to sartorially-minded observers, was: who would Michelle Obama wear?
The answer wasn’t obvious, because there aren’t many designers of Cuban descent, and Mrs Obama frequently honours designers who have ties to a visitor or destination. In the end, she chose a mid-length, floral number in a Kashmiri printed fabric by the Indian-American designer Naeem Khan. Khan reportedly sent a number of “casual cocktail” options to the First Lady, and had no idea that she would choose the dress she did, which was slightly adapted from his pre-fall collection.
This isn’t the first time Obama’s worn an Indian designer, or even the first time she’s worn designs by Mumbai-born Khan, who designed her singularly glamorous, strapless champagne evening gown for the state dinner in 2009 with then-prime minister Manmohan Singh. Just last week, her daughters, Sasha and Malia, both wore Naeem Khan gowns for their own state dinner debut, at an event for the Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau.
